Nigerian Foreign Minister: The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project is making significant and notable progress

 Nigerian Foreign Minister Youssef Togar confirmed, on Monday in Oran, that the trans-Saharan gas pipeline project, which links Nigeria and Algeria via Niger, is making “significant and noticeable” progress.

Mr. Togar said in a media statement on the sidelines of the tenth high-level symposium on security and peace in Africa, which concluded today in Oran, that “significant and notable progress” had been achieved. In the implementation works of this gas pipeline project in the Algerian and Nigerian regions.

In this context, the Minister stated that Algeria and Nigeria are among the most important gas producing countries, and that the demand in Europe for this energy represents an opportunity for Algeria, Nigeria and Niger.

It is noteworthy that the trans-Saharan gas pipeline project connects the three countries with a total length of 4,128 km, including 1,037 km within Nigerian territory, 841 km in Niger, and 2,310 km in Algeria, where it will connect the gas fields in Nigeria (starting from Warri on the Niger River) to the Algerian network, so that the gas can be marketed. Nigerian, especially in European markets.

The project will benefit from the capabilities available in Algeria in terms of infrastructure, especially the transportation network, liquefied natural gas complexes, and petrochemical facilities, as well as the geographical location close to gas markets.

In February 2022, Algeria, Nigeria, and Niger confirmed their commitment to completing this strategic project, as the ministers in charge of the energy sector in the three countries agreed, in Niamey, to develop a work road map to implement the project.

After a series of meetings, in Algiers in July 2022, a memorandum of understanding was signed to implement the trans-Saharan gas pipeline project, where the three parties confirmed their intention to send studies and various programs under this framework.
