Algeria chairs Security Council meeting on political and humanitarian situation in Syria

New York (United Nations) - The Security Council held a meeting today, Wednesday, chaired by Algeria, devoted to the political and humanitarian situation in Syria.

Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mr. Amar Benjamaa, will speak on behalf of the "A3+" group (Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Guyana), which will once again have the opportunity to present its position on the situation in Syria.

The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria, Geir Pedersen, and the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, will provide a briefing on the latest developments on the situation in Syria.

During the Security Council meeting held on December 17, the A3+ group called for respect for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling on the Syrians to launch a political process under the supervision of the United Nations in order to reach a “new Syria” that includes all Syrians.
