The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, received on Monday the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Mr. Staffan de Mistura, who is currently visiting Algeria as part of a tour of the region, a statement from the ministry indicated.
This meeting "allowed for a review of efforts aimed at reviving the negotiation process on the Western Sahara issue, in order to find a political solution mutually acceptable to both parties to the conflict, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, and guaranteeing the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination," the statement said.
In this regard, Mr. Attaf reaffirmed "Algeria's support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, and his Personal Envoy," stressing "the importance of engaging in negotiations without preconditions, and the need to create the optimal conditions for direct negotiations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front to lead to a just, lasting and definitive solution to the Western Sahara issue."
The Minister of State also highlighted the "pivotal role" of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) in the stability of the region, noting in this regard "Algeria's constant position, which calls for respect for the resolutions of international law relating to the Western Sahara issue, and for treating the latter as a question of decolonization".
