France's support for the so-called "autonomy plan" in Western Sahara: Algeria decides to withdraw its ambassador to France

ALGIERS - The Algerian Government has decided to withdraw its ambassador to the French Republic with immediate effect and the Algerian diplomatic representation in France is now the responsibility of a chargé d'affaires, following France's recognition of the Moroccan autonomy plan as the "sole basis" for settling the Western Sahara conflict within the framework of Morocco's alleged sovereignty, a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad said on Tuesday.

"The French Government has finally given its frank and categorical support to the colonial fact imposed on Western Sahara. This step that no other French Government before it had believed it had to take, the current Government has done it with great levity and great nonchalance, without lucidly measuring all the potential repercussions", specifies the same source.

"By recognizing the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole basis for resolving the conflict in Western Sahara within the framework of Morocco's alleged sovereignty, the French Government flouts international legality, takes up the cause of the denial of the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, distances itself from all the patient and persevering efforts deployed by the United Nations to complete the decolonization of Western Sahara and manifests an abdication of the special responsibilities that it must assume, in all circumstances, as a permanent member of the Security Council," the statement stressed.

As a result, "the Algerian Government has decided to withdraw its ambassador to the French Republic with immediate effect. Algerian diplomatic representation in France is now the responsibility of a chargé d'affaires," the same source added.
