ALGIERS- Representing the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Prime Minister, Mr. Nadir Larbaoui, chaired, Saturday evening in Algiers, a ceremony organized in honor of Algerian women on the occasion of the celebration of International Women's Day.

Organized under the slogan "The Algerian woman: challenges and victory", the ceremony took place in the presence of the Minister of National Solidarity, Family and the Status of Women, Ms. Soraya Mouloudji, members of the Government, eminent female personalities in the political, economic and media fields, representatives of civil society and trade union movements, as well as moudjahidate.

In a speech delivered on this occasion, Mrs. Mouloudji stressed that "the organization of this celebration, under the renewed patronage of the President of the Republic, demonstrates his concern to promote and enhance the place of women, being convinced of its symbolic and civilizational value."

He added that this ceremony, chaired by the Prime Minister, "testifies to the eminent place occupied by Algerian women in our country while remaining faithful to our glorious history", recalling, at the same time, the heroism of Algerian women during the Liberation Revolution.

Ms. Mouloudji further reaffirmed that the celebration of Algerian women "is intended as a recognition of their brilliant career at the continental and international levels."

This "could not have been achieved without the special attention paid to them by the President of the Republic, who has always believed in their ability to actively participate in the development process of our country, by encouraging their central role in socio-economic development," the minister said.

In the same context, Ms. Mouloudji highlighted the Algerian State's concern to "enshrine the political empowerment of women", recalling the efforts made for "the promotion of their rights, through the strengthening of the representation of women in elected assemblies", which resulted, she said, in "the enshrinement of the principle of gender parity in the composition of electoral lists".

Referring also to girls' access to education and training, the minister highlighted "the exceptional results" achieved in this area.

According to the latest statistics, out of 1.8 million university students, 65 percent are girls, she said, recalling that girls accounted for more than 68 percent of all university graduates last year.
