The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit, by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, in charge of African Affairs, Salma Bakhta Mansouri, and the Executive Director of the Continental Secretariat of the African Peer Review Mechanism, Marie Antoinette Rose Carter.
The signing ceremony of this memorandum comes as an embodiment of the decision of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which he announced during his chairmanship of the 34th Summit of the Forum of Heads of State and Government of the African Peer Review Mechanism, held the day before yesterday, Friday, in Addis Ababa, which stipulates granting this mechanism a voluntary contribution estimated at one (1) million US dollars, to support its activities and programs.
This occasion was an opportunity for Ms. Mansouri to renew Algeria's commitment as a founding country of the African Peer Review Mechanism, under the wise leadership of the President of the Republic, to activate its role in addressing the challenges facing governance in Africa, especially the keenness to consolidate the rule of law, combat corruption and promote the values of democracy.
In a statement to the press following the signing of the memorandum of understanding, the Executive Director of the Continental Secretariat of the African Peer Review Mechanism, Marie Antoinette Rose Carter, expressed her "great gratitude" to Algeria, stressing that this initiative is evidence of its "steadfast commitment to African unity and cooperation."
She added: "I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Algeria for its confidence in the African Peer Review Mechanism and for its unwavering commitment to African unity and renaissance and the rapid realization of the aspirations of our peoples as stipulated in the African Union Agenda 2063."
Ms. Rose Carter highlighted that Algeria's contribution "will certainly allow the African mechanism to implement its mandate and obtain tangible results", adding that "most importantly, it will enable it to be visible as a transformative mechanism for good governance in the African Union".
